How to Annotate a Screenshot on Mac

For quick markup, macOS lets you annotate a screenshot from its thumbnail or in Preview. When you need a capture-and-annotation workflow with arrows, text, shapes, highlighting, and export controls together, use a dedicated screenshot editor.

Use macOS Markup for basic edits

Take a screenshot, click the thumbnail that appears, then use the Markup button to annotate it. Preview also has a Markup toolbar for image files. This is a good option when you only need a quick note or shape on an existing image.
