How to Draw on a Screenshot on Mac

To draw on a screenshot you already have, use macOS Markup or Preview today. TrarrenShot Advanced Editor is coming soon for opening and annotating existing images. In the current release, TrarrenShot’s Inline Editor adds annotations to a new screenshot after One Shot capture.

Use macOS Markup for basic edits

Take a screenshot, click the thumbnail that appears, then use the Markup button to annotate it. Preview also has a Markup toolbar for image files. This is a good option when you only need a quick note or shape on an existing image.

Annotate a new screenshot with One Shot

    Start One Shot

    Start One Shot from the menu bar or use your configured shortcut.

    Choose what to capture

    Select a window, region, or full screen.

    Add annotations

    Use the available Inline Editor to mark up the new capture and refine its final area.

    Export the result

    Copy, save, or share the annotated screenshot.

Tools in today’s Inline Editor

The available Inline Editor includes rectangles, circles, lines, arrows, text, pen, highlighter, pixelate, magnify, and step tools. Use them to point out a UI element, emphasize an area, or explain a sequence. Pixelate visually obscures a selected area; do not rely on it as secure redaction.

Usage guidance

  • Keep the markup focused: an arrow, short label, or highlight is often clearer than covering the image with notes.
  • Annotations are added in the One Shot editor. To draw over a live desktop during a call or demo, use Live Canvas.
  • Use Pixelate when a captured area should be obscured before you share it.

After annotation
